Pick Up The Phone And Call Your Social Media Connections
By Kevin Knebl
When you’re new to learning about Social Media, the tendency is to focus on huge numbers of Connections, Friends and Followers. This is normal. We all like things that look impressive and big numbers look impressive. Prior to Facebook, where else could you have thousands of “friends”? It feeds our ego.
Once the new car smell of Social Media wears off, we realize that building relationships is far more powerful than just adding more connections. Yes, adding connections is important. But you already have a phone book with tens of thousands of connections. If it was just about connections, you already have more than enough in your Yellow and White Pages.

Independent filmmakers are using social networking sites to fund their films
This article was written by Jaskiran Kapoor.
“When filmmaker Onirban sat down to sort out his finances for his latest film I Am, he realised he was falling short of money. It was a bold film and not many producers were eager to invest. “That’s when I put up my film’s post on Facebook, and in no time we had money pouring in,” he says.
All donations and cheques were received via Facebook and the film was wrapped up in time. “It is one of the first films in India to be crowd-sourced,” says Onir, adding how he and his team requested users of Facebook and Twitter to be ‘co-owners’ in their venture, in the process evolving a novel model of financing movies.”

“New research indicates that most of the largest social networking and social media Web sites are frequented by more women than men. With that in mind, you must conclude that if you think you can market in cyberspace as if you are selling car batteries at half-time, think again and again.”

Social networking tips for the anti-social
“Are you an anti-social social networker?
While social networking (and your participation in it) could have me assume that you want to connect with others and be social — what’s the best way to approach social networking if you want to maintain privacy or if you’re typically shy and reserved?
The great thing about social networking is that you can choose your level of engagement. You can also be very active, while maintaining privacy and control over who you connect with and how you interact.
Even if you’re shy, not used to (or wanting) the spotlight or like to listen more than speak, you can still use social networks to share your expertise, show that you know your stuff in your own niche and connect with others with others of similar interests.”

Social Media: Love it or Hate it, it’s Time to Embrace it!
“You may have heard of Social Media and be wondering what all the fuss is about.
With Facebook, Twitter, Bebo, MySpace and Ecademy as options there is a lot of noise about them! We’ve seen the National Press slate them for being pointless and boring with tales of people reporting their trips to the toilet but the fact remains that if you are in business you’ll need to get involved.”

Social technology growth marches on in 2009, led by social network sites
“We just published our third annual Social Technographics Profile in a document called “The Broad Reach of Social Technologies” . The author is Sean Corcoran, with help from out data expert Cynthia Pflaum. The data across North America, Europe, and Asia is now available.
Starting with the book “Groundswell” and continuing now for three years running, we’ve analyzed consumers’ participation in social technologies around the world with a tool called the “Social Technographics Profile.” The profile puts online people into overlapping groups based on their participation (at least once a month) in the behaviors shown in the ladder. We’ve kept the ladder categories consistent to allow us to make comparisons year-to-year, across ages and genders, and across geographies. This provides something that’s often sorely lacking in analysis of online social phenomena: perspective.”
