    If you read my first guest post on We Make Stuff Happen, you will know I went into Twitter kicking and screaming (okay… a little dramatic but I AM an actor, after all). When the light bulb illuminated the possibilities, I pulled my chair up and got the unexpected.

    How many times have I heard “I don’t care what you ate for breakfast” when met with resistance to the seemingly gossipy platform. “Oh, you’d be surprised by how many people actually like knowing what you ate.” It’s the human condition. We want to know we’re similar. Or, we want to know alternative ways, other types of cereals or other cultures’ strange morning habits.

    Jonathan, this time, asked me about some of my positive interesting twitter stories.

    Early on in my Twitterland, my partner and I were heading to Singapore to give a “Directing the Actor” workshop at Media Corp (big television producing company). Our workshop design needed two actors for the scenes we would prep for the directing students. Well, one of the actors was obviously me, and a local actor would fit our budget, but, who?

    As of today, as I write, I have been on Twitter for 1721 days. Almost five years. In the big scheme of things, a short period, but in the social media realm, a significant period – especially, as social media was just beginning to warm up in 2008.

    I come from the arts world. I’m an actor, teacher, workshop facilitator, and a writer. Social media, i.e. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, all scared me. Despite being in the public eye, I desired to retain my privacy and social media offered the opposite. Eventually, my FOMO (fear of missing out) kicked in and I joined.

    Twitter was the platform I understood the least, therefore I stuck my toes in the freezing twitter stream until I finally “GOT IT”. And, I did. I warmed up and started to have a good time.
    When Jonathan asked me  “what would you do differently if you could start over again?” I had to really think.

    Every Thurs­day morn­ing at 7:00 I start my day with a rol­lick­ing, yet pro­fes­sional meet­ing with the Think Refer­rals Busi­ness Net­work. We have our break­fast, present our 60 sec­ond updates, maybe watch a pre­sen­ta­tion and/or dis­cuss some of our busi­ness chal­lenges. And, we have fun.

    Some of the chal­lenges that emerged today related to sales.

    Sales. A scary word that con­jures up plaid jack­eted, smok­ing, slick used car sales­men and buyer’s remorse. EEK… But, this word is what we all do, all the time. Ask Daniel H. Pink! His newly released book “To Sell Is Human: The Sur­pris­ing Truth About Mov­ing Oth­ers” addresses this very issue. I love Dan Pink’s books (“A Whole New Mind” “Drive”) and this one is another goody. I rec­om­mend read­ing all three.

    Pink dis­cusses how we all work in sales, “whether we’re employ­ees pitch­ing col­leagues on a new idea, entre­pre­neurs entic­ing fun­ders to invest, or par­ents and teach­ers cajol­ing chil­dren to study, we spend our days try­ing to move others.”

    Or a home­less per­son ask­ing for help.

    When I left the meet­ing this morn­ing, I was almost to my car when a rough, albeit gen­tle, thin look­ing man approached me and started talking.

    His first state­ment: “I’m not going to ask you for money.” I slowed my pace. He asked, “Could you con­sider maybe get­ting me some food? A loaf of flax bread or some­thing? My girl­friend is celiac and it’s hard.” I stopped. Celiac? I related. “Oh, that’s tough. I under­stand as I need to be gluten free, too.”

    Oh, oh, I was engaged now. And, I knew it would be very hard to turn my back on this guy. “Maybe you could just take me to a store and buy me some food, because I know peo­ple don’t believe me when I ask for money.”
